Grapefruit Seed Extract

Suggested Use Max Strength Liquid Drops

Therapeutic: 1 drop per every 10 pounds of body weight up to 3 times a day to aggressively treat a known or suspected infection. In case of an acute infection these dosages may be exceeded.

Preventative: 1 drop of GSE per 10 pounds of body weight per day to ward off bacteria and fungus, as well as helping to boost the immune system.

Notes:

  • Concentrated grapefruit seed extract in liquid form should always be mixed with water or broth before adding to food and capsules should be given with meals.
  • If your dog is taking medications it is advisable to check with your vet before giving GSE to your dog because grapefruit (the fruit itself, grapefruit juice, seed extract) is known to either diminish the potency of certain drugs, or increase their toxicity.

Bowel tolerance test:

Too much vitamin C, especially if given in one dose, may cause diarrhea in dogs. What amount is too much varies from dog to dog, so, when administering the maximum amount of C for a therapeutic (not just maintenance) dose, many veterinarians will suggest that you increase the dose in 100-500 milligram-per-day increments until the dog develops diarrhea for longer than a day, then reduce his daily dose to the previous dose. (This is often referred to as dosing to “bowel tolerance.”)

Individual dogs may be more or less tolerant of vitamin C supplements, and their tolerance may change with environmental conditions. For instance, a dog that is experiencing great stress may tolerate 4,000 milligrams without diarrhea, but develop bowel intolerance as the stress is removed. The owner’s awareness of the quality of the dog’s stool is critical to appropriate dosing.
